Introduction to Organizational Performance Consultancy

The different experiences and perspectives I gained by working in the public sector, international organizations and environments for many years, and the management experience I gained from a challenging project after retirement allowed me to realize once again that the performance of any institution or project is directly related to the capacity for leadership. There is a great need for development in this area in our country.

If we were to stop [from action] to reflect for a moment, we would wonder why people work in some projects and organizations for a long time while in others this time span is short and there is a continuous circulation of personnel.  Why is it that the motivation of personnel working in some organizations or only several units of these organizations are highly motivated and energetic while those in others are not? What is the effect of this situation on the overall success and performance of that organization? Why is it that working in certain institutions and organizations is prestigious with regard to professional advancement while others are not? What is a healthy organization and how does it come about? Who is a strong or good leader?

Most research carried out based on these questions has revealed that performance is low in growth and competition based organizational structures in which fear, secrecy and censorship are dominant, personnel are frequently blamed, rules are imposed and pleasing the boss is the greatest concern. Furthermore, it is true that many organizations start out with certain values but fall short of realizing and applying these, which in turn damages the image of the institution. Similar approaches also lead to a decrease in individual performance.

In the new business culture, growth and competition is replaced with sustainability and cooperation, fear with trust, secrecy and censorship with transparency and honesty, blame with understanding, learning and sharing responsibility, teaching with learning, and imposed rules with internalized values. Pleasing the customer has become more important than pleasing the boss. Furthermore, fear of change has been replaced with openness to change and growth. Intrinsic motivational elements have taken the place of extrinsic motivational elements.

Today, while many organizations in the world and in our country think that they manage their personnel well with old management approaches, they either lose their most talented personnel or make them perform at a low level.

Moreover, these organizations fail to assess the long-term effects of not benefiting from their full potential and creativity; so to say, they shoot themselves in the foot.
